For four centuries Plaza Mayor has been the city’s communal courtyard and one of Madrid’s most unique places. For the occasion of the 4th Centenary of the commencement of its construction, the square has thus been made one of the city’s cultural focal points, becoming a channel for offerings and initiatives by cultural, artistic, economic and social agents to enable it to be reborn as a place that’s cultured yet popular, austere yet ornamented, and to celebrate its 400 years of history alongside Madrid’s residents and visitors.
