Lobby, UNED Central Library
The Central Library building, designed by architect José Ignacio Linazasoro, became the public image of the National Distance Education University (UNED) in 1995. It houses the university’s main offices and the document resource centres for the Schools of Humanities, Sciences and Social Sciences. With a cube-shaped brick exterior, the first six floors of the building are organised around a central atrium, circular from the ground floor to the fifth floor and square on the sixth. At the top of the building, the seventh floor boasts skylights and a windowed area for stunning views of Oeste Park, the Royal Palace, La Almudena Cathedral and Casa de Campo Park. This building received a commendation in the New Construction category of the 8th edition of the Town Planning, Architecture and Public Infrastructure Awards 1993 by the Madrid City Council and an Honourable Mention in the category of Architecture, COAM Awards 1993 by the Madrid Official Association of Architects.
