Gran Vía, which stretches from Calle Alcalá to Calle Princesa, is over one hundred years old and is one of the city's main thoroughfares, in addition to being one of its most iconic avenues. Constructed between 1910 and 1931, its creation marked the beginning of a wave of modernisation in the city, with the construction of the country’s first skyscrapers and the arrival of contemporary architectural trends from the United States.
