Monument to the Heroes of Baler
This monument, installed in the Plaza del Conde del Valle de Súchil, in Chamberí, pays homage to the Spanish detachment known as “the Last of the Philippines”, who between July 1898 and June 1899 were besieged by Philippine troops in a church in the town of Baler, on the island of Luzón. The sculpture was made by Salvador Amaya from a sketch by painter Augusto Ferrer Dalmau. It represents Lieutenant Saturnino Martín Castillo brandishing a gun with a vigilant attitude. The monument was inaugurated on 13 January 2020 to celebrate the 120th anniversary of this historic event.
