Portico at the entrance to La Almudena Cemetery
La Almudena Cemetery, located in the district of Ciudad Lineal, is the city’s main graveyard. Its incalculable worth stems from both its history and its works of art, as well as the famous figures that lie in rest there.
It was created in 1884 and inaugurated in 1925. In terms of area, it's the largest in Madrid and one of the biggest in Western Europe.
Buried in its holy ground are the remains of illustrious figures like Pío Baroja, Benito Pérez Galdós, Enrique Tierno Galván and Lola Flores.
