General shot of Plaza de Santa Ana
Plaza de Santa Ana is located in the heart of Barrio de las Letras (Literary Quarter) in the city centre, a stone’s throw away from Puerta del Sol.
Art has left its mark on the square over the course of history, initially because it was the location of La Pacheca and El Príncipe, the first corrales de comedias or open-air theatres, which stood on the site where Teatro Español is now located, and later on because it was a meeting place for writers, playwrights, painters, etc.
On the west side of the square is the Reina Victoria luxury hotel, which has hosted famous aristocrats, musicians and, above all, bullfighters, as it was a favourite with those who were going to fight in Las Ventas bullring. The hotel has been renamed, it’s now the ME Reina Victoria, and it boasts one of the city's most famous rooftops.
The square's decorative elements include statues of famous playwrights Federico García Lorca and Pedro Calderón de la Barca.
