Statue of Goya and entrance to the parish church of San Jerónimo El Real (Saint Jerome the Royal), known locally as Los Jerónimos.
The Church of San Jerónimo el Real (popularly known as “Los Jerónimos”) is located behind the Prado Museum and dates back to the 16th century. It was one of Madrid’s most important monasteries from the 16th to the 19th century, when the monks were expelled by French troops during the Peninsular War. After the war, the church was restored but the cloister was left untouched. It suffered progressive deterioration and, after an agreement was reached with church authorities, was eventually salvaged and incorporated into the Prado Museum as part of the expansion project designed by architect Rafael Moneo. Due to its outward appearance, the cloister is commonly known as the “Moneo Cube”.
