On the left, the Círculo de Bellas Artes, and on the right, the Metropolis Building
Founded in 1880, the Círculo de Bellas Artes, one of the city’s great cultural epicentres, did not occupy its current site in Calle Alcalá until 1926. The building, which was designed by Antonio Palacios, has enormous architectural value, particularly for its iconic façade. Opposite stands the Metropolis Building, which was inaugurated in 1911 as the headquarters of the insurance company La Unión y el Fénix. Its most distinctive element is its slate dome with golden incrustations.
