Descripción:

The Pious Schools of San Fernando were the first schools to be founded in Madrid by the Order of the Scolopi. Opened in 1729 as an educational centre for poor children, it soon became renowned for its high standards and innovative educational techniques. Destroyed during the Civil War, all that remains of the building today are the ruins of what was formerly the school chapel. The building has now been fully restored and houses the UNED (National Distance Education University) head offices. With a large library, auditoriums and assembly halls, it has breathed a new lease of life and culture into the traditional district of Lavapiés.
