Entrance to the crypt of the Convent of Las Trinitarias
Located in the Barrio de las Letras (Literary Quarter), the convent – also known as the San Ildefonso and San Juan de la Mata Monastery – was initially built in 1612 around a modest church where the writer Miguel de Cervantes was buried in 1616. However, this building was demolished and in 1668 the architect Marcos López built the Baroque church that we know today, with construction on the convent beginning in 1718. In 2015, the remains of Miguel de Cervantes were found. They were laid to rest inside the church in a monument built in his honour, which can be visited.
